The Municipality of Santa Pau is situated in the Country or "Comarca" of La Garrotxa, to the South East of the Olot plain, at 496 metres above level sea. It has one single road approach: the Olot to Banyoles road, at 150 Km from Barcelona, 50 Km from Girona an 9 from Olot. The two nearest frontier are at Coll d'Ares and Coll del Portús.

The Lords of Santa Pau came to the village in the 12th century and in 1300 Ponç de Santa Pau otorge one "carta de poblament" to repopulation the zone. In 1456 the Curia of Besalú sold the Barony of Santa Pau to Berenguer V de Oms and in the 17th century the Baronial title passed to Marquis of Castelldosrius.
